History & Geography

Administratively created on August 27, 1991 from the eastern half of the former Imo state, it bordered by the states of Imo in the west, Cross River in the east, Akwa Ibom and Rivers in the south and Ebonyi and Enugu in the north. It consists of 17 Local Government Areas.

People & Economy

Abia State is one of the few states that have commercial, agricultural and mineral potentials in the Nigeria. The people are predominantly traders and farmers. Crops cultivated include palm produce, maize, rice, yam, cassava, fruits and vegetables. They are very creative people and they dominate the productive sector of the economy. Aba is regarded as one of the commercial centre in the country and many of the home-made products generally come from there. The state is blessed with mineral resources such as lead, zinc, fine sand, limestone and petroleum. Major industrial concerns in the state include Golden Guinea Breweries, Umuahia; Aba Textile Mills; International Glass Industries, Aba and Modern Ceramics, Umuahia. Abia State is rightly tagged the "Japan of Nigeria" as there is nothing that could not be produced if the necessary raw materials and equipment's are made available.

Culture

Abia State are ethnically Igbo. Education very important in the state and this is evident by the numerous private schools present. Some institute of higher learning include Abia State University at Uturu; Abia State Polytechnic, Aba; Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike-Umuahia and other Colleges of Education. The state is rich in culture and heritage. There are a number of annual cultural festivals, the Ekpe Festival, New yam festival just to mention a few.

Tourism

Main tourist attractions in Abia State include the National War Museum, Umuahia; Azumini Blue River, Ukwa East; Long Juju of Arochukwu and Aba Central Market.. Main hotels include, Banana Hotel in Umuahia and Crystal Park Hotel in Aba.The Abia Hotels at Aba and Umuahia.
