Ikechukwu- Cultural Executive

ike

What is your Igbo name? Ikechukwu
What is the meaning of your Igbo name? Power of God
What State are you from? Anambra State

How long have you been a member of ICSN? I have been around since 2012

How did you first hear about ICSN and why did you decide to come? I heard about it through a friend and was keen to meet Igbo brothers and sisters in London (Nwanne di mba). I was so excited when i attended and heard about the goals and motivations behind the group. Most importantly, the fact that all the members were of a young age compared to at our parents meeting.

What has been your favourite meeting, event or experience to date at ICSN and why? I have several highs but top on the list is the faithful day I set my eye on my missing rib, my lovely wife. Another event that will always stand out for me is the Iri-ji festival. The socialisation/networking of families and friends and businesses and the sizing up of potential suitors from both men and ladies (A man who hangs around a beautiful woman without saying a word may end up someday fetching drinking water to guests at her wedding). I had very interesting meetings in the past ranging from the sharing of experiences of people during the Biafrian war of 1967 and the modern day socialisation platform as compared to the olden days.

What Executive position do you hold and what does your role involve? I am one of the Cultural Executives and this role involves upholding the values of Igbo tradition, promoting and preserving the very essence our ancestors and fathers (past and present) have fought, lived and died for. It is then our responsibility to ensure we continue to fan into flame the very rich Igbo culture and tradition as Igbos.

What do you plan to do within your role in the over the next year?  Bring into the group lots of the different elements of Igbo tradition and culture to members while upholding the already existing achievement of the previous executives.

What are you looking forward to most being in the exec?  Building a stronger brand by our words and actions.

What motivated you to run to be part of the exec? I have always been motivated but wanted to ensure the time was right as I know the position requires great effort from me if the set goals are to be achieved.

What do you do for work and how did you get into this line of work? I am an administrator and got into my present job role with the intention to grow my experience and becoming a reputable individual some day in any organisation where my talent will be even more appreciated and rewarded. I would like to set up a service or business that will benefit a lot of the human kind. My other career is as a photographer and videographer. See Iri-ji 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFRFG2hkBbM)

Any advice to anyone wanting to get into your field? When you pray, pray like your entire life depends on it and when you work adopt same principle for the simple reason that our ends are already known just as our beginning by God. Jer 29:11 my favourite verse. Competition never takes you anywhere healthy.

What are your plans for the future career wise? I live for now, my tomorrow is already decided. However, I wish to see unity especially among all Igbo people even in disagreements and if I happen to be a tool to achieving this, then I am happy doing it and will deliver with every energy within me.

What is your favourite dish (pick one Nigerian and one non Nigerian)? Can you make either of them? Bitter leaf soup is definitely my favourite

Please tell us about one of your favourite pastimes/hobbies? What do you like about it? How often?  Dancing and playing cheese. I try and do both whenever I can!

Surprise me with an unusual random fact about yourself? I am a fashion designer and can sew ladies clothes, I was sewing with my mum since I was 8yrs though on a different career path at the moment and hopefully will come back to it in style some day.

Do you speak Igbo? If yes, how would you describe your skill level? If not, do you plan to learn?  I am fluent in Igbo speaking (okuku hapu atu-mkpom, ojiri gini zuo umu ya)

If you were to have a dinner party and could invite three people to join you, who would they be and why (can be people you know or famous people both dead / alive)? My wife, myself and God
